요즘 카이와 테이트는 한국에서 오신 할아버지, 할머니와 함께 즐거운 시간을 보내고 있습니다. 오래 머무시는 일정이라서 몇 차례의 여행일정도 잡혀있는데 지난 주말에는 2박3일 일정으로 Connecticut주의 Mystic에 다녀왔습니다. 카이와 테이트는 작은 항구도시와 그 주변에 있는 여러 볼거리들을 즐겼는데, 같은 동네로 여행을 계획하시는 분들을 위해서 짤막한 소개를 해 봅니다.
Mystic Seaport
입장료를 내고 들어가면 꽤 넓은 면적을 가진 항구안에 범선을 비롯한 여러 척의 배, 항구와 관련된 전시, 등대, 아이들을 위한 놀거리 등 수십가지의 여러 볼거리들을 구경할 수 있습니다. 5월부터는 배를 직접 타 볼 수도 있다고 하더군요. 생각보다 볼 것이 많은 곳이었고, 어른과 아이들이 함께 즐길 수 있는 곳이었습니다. 티켓이 꽤 비싼데 AAA 멤버쉽이 있으면 4명까지 3불씩 할인. www.mysticseaport.org
Mystic Aquarium
규모는 작은 편이지만, 코니아일랜드에 있는 뉴욕아쿠아리움이나, 남부뉴저지에 있는 어드벤쳐 아쿠아리움보다 더 깨끗하고 잘 관리된 아쿠아리움이라는 인상. 개인적인 느낌으로는 아이들이 즐기기에는 위의 두 군데보다 더 좋은 듯. 특히 저 위의 사진에 보이는 Beluga Whale이란 놈은 정말정말 귀엽고, 비디오에 보이듯 춤추는 문어나, 아이들 손 움직임에 따라 도는 물개도 인상적입니다. 어린이박물관들처럼 아이들도 티켓을 사야합니다. www.mysticaquarium.org
Jonathan Edwards Winery
Mystic에서 약 15마일 거리에 위치한 이 와이너리는 제가 읽은 어느 와인관련 칼럼에 따르면 뉴잉글랜드 지역의 와이너리 중에서 예쁘기로 손꼽히는 곳이라는군요. (부근의 다른 와이너리를 가 본 적이 없어서 비교는 어렵지만, 제 느낌으론 그 글에서처럼 예쁘지는 않았습니다. 크기도 작은 편이고.) 매일 오후 3시에 무료 와인투어를 하는데, 아이들과 함께 따라다니기에는 불편한 점들이 많았고, 와이너리를 구경하러 왔다기보다는, 야외 테이블에서 술을 먹으러 온 것처럼 보이는 사람들이 더 많았습니다. www.jedwardswinery.com
Mohegan Sun Casino
제가 가본 미국 동부의 수십여군데의 카지노들 중에서 가장 잘 디자인된 인테리어를 가진 카지노입니다. 아메리카 원주민의 스타일을 응용해서 벽과 천정, 많은 조형물들을 일관성있고 아름답게 꾸며놓았습니다. 담배연기만 자욱한 다른 카지노와 비교해서 한 차원 높은, 격이 있는 분위기. 시골마을의 한적함이 지루해질만한 무렵, 아이들을 데리고 가서 화려한 인테리어를 잠깐 즐기고, 저녁을 먹고 오기에 좋습니다. 아이들이 놀만한 전자오락실 같은 공간도 있고, 부페는 6세 이하 아이들은 공짜. Stepping Stones Museum for Children
Mystic에서 뉴욕으로 돌아오는 길 중간쯤에 위치한 1층짜리 어린이박물관. 크기는 비교적 작지만, 깨끗하고 알차게 잘 꾸며놓았습니다. 2-5세 가량의 아이들이 두어시간 즐기기에 딱 좋습니다. 뉴욕, 북부뉴저지에서 당일치기로 다녀오기에도 가능한 거리. ACM 멤버에겐 무료. www.steppingstonesmuseum.org
Stew Leonard's
위의 어린이박물관과 같은 도시 Norwalk에 있는 수퍼마켓. 수많은 종류의 유제품들과 친절한 서비스로 유명하다는데, 무엇보다 독특한 점은 아이들을 위한 볼거리가 매장 중간중간에 많이 있다는 점. 누군가가 'grocery store의 Disney'라고 말했다는데, 가보면 그게 무슨 뜻인지 알게 됩니다.

She studied computer programming as well as programming-based design and used to work as a programmer.
However, she is so busy these days in taking care of two boys that she cannot find enough time to even open her e-mails everyday.
Boyeon likes ice creams, Korean rice cakes, Klimt’s oil paintings and Michael Mann’s 1995 film Heat and
she also enjoys traveling culturally-distinctive places like southern Europe.
Boyeon is a perfectionist and has amazingly good memory. She easily shed tears, has an acute sense of taste and is a good cook.
Kai was born on October 19th, 2006 in New Jersey as Boyeon and June’s first son and it was 20 years after his parents first met in their junior high.
Now he is Tate's big brother.
