한국에 다녀왔습니다. 서울에서 열리는 카이와 테이트의 외삼촌 결혼식에 맞추어 4년만의 고국방문 일정을 잡았던 건데, 마침 얼추 날짜가 맞아서 테이트의 돌잔치까지 서울에서 치르고 왔습니다. 2주 남짓한 짧은 일정이었는데, 꼭 해야할 많은 일들—주로 가족, 병원, 관공서와 관련한—을 전쟁치르듯 끝내고 온 것 같습니다. 시차가 바뀐 아이들 때문에 친구들을 많이 만나지 못한 것이 큰 아쉬움으로 남습니다만, 다음번에 아이들이 더 커서 가게 되면 좀 낫겠지요.
요즘 한참 비디오 편집에 재미를 들인 June은 이번 여행 직전에 HD 동영상 촬영이 되는 똑딱이 디카를 샀는데, 돌아오자마자 그걸로 찍어온 동영상들을 모아 10분짜리 비디오를 만들었습니다. 아름다운 배경음악 위에 멋진 장면만을 모아놓은 이런 동영상을 통해 보이는 것과는 달리, 실상은 참 힘겨운 여행이었습니다.
그 중 하이라이트는 서울가는 비행기 안에서 있었는데, (1) 비좁고 어두운 공간 안에서 (2) 많은 낯선 사람들에게 둘러싸여 (3) 졸리기까지 한, 카이가 싫어하는 3박자가 완벽하게 갖추어진 조건 아래에서, 너무나 당연하게도 카이는 평소의 모습을 유감없이 보여주었습니다. 제 자리에 앉기를 거부하며 계속 울어대는 카이가 밤비행기 승객들의 단잠을 다 깨우는 실력발휘(?)를 한 끝에, 원래 일반승객들이 앉으면 안된다는 맨 뒷자리의 승무원 좌석을 차지하고 앉아서 서울에 도착할 무렵까지 고집을 피웠고, 그 덕에 June은 그 옆에 12시간 넘도록 선 채로 벌을 서야 했습니다. Tate를 맡은 Boyeon의 사정도 크게 다르지 않아서, 자리에 앉아있던 시간보다 테이트를 안고 좁은 복도를 왔다갔다 한 시간이 더 많았습니다. 그런 악몽같은 상황에서 June은 '뉴욕으로 돌아갈 때는 배를 타고 가겠노라'며 속으로 다짐했었는데, 아무래도 배를 타고 태평양을 건너는 건 무리였고, 다행스럽게도 돌아오는 비행기는 비교적 평화로왔습니다. 카이 옆에 계속 서 있는 June을 안쓰럽게 지켜보던 다른 승객들이 나중에 애가 큰 다음에 보여줘야 한다며 사진이라도 찍어놓으라고 했었는데, 암튼 그 장면이 비디오에도 살짝 담겼습니다.
서울에서 카이와 테이트는 매일 밤이면 깨서 놀다가, 이제 겨우 한국의 시간대에 적응이 될만 하던 참에 돌아오게 되었는데, 1주일이 다 되어가도록 아직 시차적응이 안되어 온가족이 더불어 고생입니다.

Boyeon was born and grew up in Seoul and now lives by the Hudson river in New Jersey with her husband and two sons.
She studied computer programming as well as programming-based design and used to work as a programmer.
However, she is so busy these days in taking care of two boys that she cannot find enough time to even open her e-mails everyday.
Boyeon likes ice creams, Korean rice cakes, Klimt’s oil paintings and Michael Mann’s 1995 film Heat and
she also enjoys traveling culturally-distinctive places like southern Europe.
Boyeon is a perfectionist and has amazingly good memory. She easily shed tears, has an acute sense of taste and is a good cook.
Kai was born on October 19th, 2006 in New Jersey as Boyeon and June’s first son and it was 20 years after his parents first met in their junior high.
Now he is Tate's big brother.
His blood type is RH A+, his horoscope is libra and his zodiac is dog.
Kai is a Hawaiian origin word that means ‘ocean’ and also has a meaning of ‘willow tree’ in native American language.
His middle name is Haon, which has a concept of “True happiness can be found in small things of everyday life.”

These days Kai goes to a preschool and sometimes surprises Mom and Dad by saying very difficult words.
Kai turns three in this fall.
Tate was born on June 2nd, 2008 in New Jersey as Boyeon and June's second son as well as Kai's brother.

The word Tate means ‘cheerful’ and has an old English origin.
His middle name is from a Korean pronunciation of a Chinese character 濬, which has a meaning of profound; to make a waterway by digging a river deep.
Tate’s name includes his parents’ wish for him to be a happy, cheerful person who also has depth in his life.
Now He walks well and tries everything his brother does. He doesn't get scared of new things.
Tate is in the second year of his life.
